For my birthday last month, Paul Caridad and I stayed at Point Montara Lighthouse Hostel just South of San Francisco, which features a lighthouse that was transported 3,000 miles from Cape Cod, Massachusetts in 1922. (See third image.) We had the most beautiful view of the Pacific Coast and staying near a lighthouse evokes such a strong sense of tranquility and security. Lighthouses have been guiding ships safely to sea since the Pharos of Alexandria, Egypt was erected in 280 B.C. Although that lighthouse was destroyed by an earthquake in the 1300s, people have been fascinated with them ever since.

To thank the lighthouses for protecting so many sailors and gorgeously decorating the coastlines around the world, we searched Instagram for some of the most beautiful images. If you like a pic, be sure to click on the link to find out the location and show the Instagrammer some love. Our theme for next week will be bonfires, so collect some sticks, gather some friends around the fire, and snap some pics while you’re at it! If you’d like to see your picture featured here next week, upload it to Instagram and tag it #bonfire @visualnews. Have a wonderful weekend and thanks for reading.

Ah, Pigeon Point, one of the tallest lighthouses in the US. Unfortunately this historical monument might be torn down due soon. It hasn’t been active in years and the upkeep is too expensive…
