We Love Friday- The Art of Skateboarding

If you want to know the definition of resilient, watch some kids working on their skateboarding tricks. No matter how quickly they stumble or how hard they hit the ground, they keep going back for more. According to Bam Margera, “Skateboarding teaches you how to take a fall properly. If you try to kickflip down some stairs, it might take you thirty tries – and you just learn how to take a tumble out of it without getting hurt.”

Skateboarding started in the 1950′s as a way for Californians to surf the streets; most boards were homemade with wooden boards strapped to rollerskates or wheels of clay. It wasn’t until 3 years after the invention of urethane skateboard wheels in 1972 that the art of skateboarding “took an evolutionary boost toward the sport that we see today” (About). The Zephyr Team and Boys of Dogtown in Venice Beach took skateboarding from pastime to passion in an abandoned pool known as the DogBowl.

To pay an homage to the art of skateboarding, we searched for some of the most rad skater pics on Instagram to share with our lovely readers. If you like a pic, be sure to click on the link and show the Instagrammer some love. Our theme for next week will be beer, so now you have an excuse to throw a few back (as if you needed one) and snap some pics! If you’d like to see your picture featured here next week, upload it to Instagram and tag it #beer @visualnews. Have a wonderful weekend and thanks for reading. Bottoms up!

  1. As an ex-skateboarder I must admit that I love these photos.
