We all know that origami paper can be used to create beautiful cranes and other animals, but Kumi Yamashima is now using it to create shadow art. The artist folds the edges of the paper in such a way that when light is shone upon it from the side it looks like a human profile silhouette. This creative artist is known for using materials in new ways; she was featured a few weeks ago for her amazing “Constellation” series of portraits made with a single thread wrapped around thousands of push pins.

Yamashita took the origami shadow profiles a step further with resin casts of the same size featuring 50 New Mexican citizens from all different backgrounds in a series called “Fragments.” Be sure to check out more of her impressive shadow figures, new twists on the elementary school favorite artform of rubbing, and warped denim portraits on her website.
