The Tiny World of the Eurasian Harvest Mouse

Thursday 06.14.2012 , Posted by

These little mice might be the most endearing little creatures out there. Known as the Eurasian Harvest Mouse, they are the smallest european rodent – only about half the size of a normal house mouse – and live in fields of tall grasses and cereal crops like oats and wheat. Their long tails are prehensile, giving them the ability to wrap around their playground-like living space and climb high into the air. They build circular nests and raise their young, unlike other mice, regurgitating food into their mouths much like birds. French photographers Jean-Louis Klein & Marie-Luce Hubert spent a year and a half with the cute little creatures, capturing the intricacies of their community in an astoundingly intimate way.

Tumblr Treasures- Typography Around the Big Apple

Thursday 06.14.2012 , Posted by

In the concrete jungle where dreams are made of (props to Alicia Keys), there are more businesses on each block than in the entirety of some towns. To some this means endless take-out food possibilities and the best shopping in the world, but to others it means a nearly infinite supply of magnificent typography. Luke Connolly started a Tumblr called NYC Type which is his photographic documentation of some of the best typography in the Big Apple. [Read more...]

One Uncut Thread Brings Incredible Portraits to Life

Thursday 06.14.2012 , Posted by

Kumi Yamashita is known for her astoundingly clever artworks which play with creating figures out of shadows… the planning and detail that go into each is truly impressive. These portraits, created from small nails and string, are no different in their insanely well planned execution. They give the viewer an impression of shading and fine details using varying densities of their geometric web. Perhaps the most intriguing thing about these faces however, is that they are made using only one continuous piece of thread. [Read more...]

3D Currency Collages Made From a World of Money

Wednesday 06.13.2012 , Posted by

We’ve seen money collages and sculptures plenty of times, from the politically charged works of Chad Person to the 3D carvings of Scott Campbell. One major thing is different about these works however: these are made from different currencies sourced from countries around the world. The effect is quite striking and beautiful, because unlike the monochromatic U.S. currency used in the aforementioned works, these are multi-colored with designs unfamiliar to many eyes. Through their multi-cultural paper source, these works seem to bring forth a message of unity, collaboration and harmony in the world… and the gracefully composed designs send exactly the same message. The paintings and illustrations of San Francisco based full-time artist and model Charmaine Olivia ooze the sex appeal and wonderment of insanely attractive female ghosts, dead long before their time. The sayings, “Was†ed You†h” and “Live Fast, Die Young” instantly come to mind when viewing her artworks. Outsiders: Beautiful Portraits of the Overlooked

Tuesday 06.12.2012 , Posted by

Inspired by the great portrait painters of old, Pierre Gonnord creates large scale portraits of people considered to be outsiders: the destitute, homeless, gypsies, and the blind. Far from treating his subjects the way that the world often does, Gonnord views his subjects through a lens of deep compassion and creates images which bring out their storied past in a reverent way. Each colorfully worn face is given to us to explore, to ponder, and question how it reached the state it is in today. In a sense, he takes people who are often considered less than human, and touchingly makes them larger than life. [Read more...]
