Martine Johanna: Dark Wanderer Sliding Into Dreams

Martine Johanna hails from a land filled with tulips, windmills, bicycles and canals. She is a Dutch born artist who was raised in the green heart of the Netherlands and now lives and works in Amsterdam. Her paintings and illustrations have an eerie, dream like feel to them. Hooded figures hide devilishly sexy bodies and trample through the woods, coming out on the other end with cosmic triangles adorning their faces, lush foliage caressing their backs, and snakes.

Since a young age, Martine was interested in music, high fashion, folk culture, nature, odd movies and storytelling; looking at her artwork below, we can tell they are all still major influences in her life. The art nouveau aesthetic her work exudes tells us a story by simply focusing on a single character. The enchantment of the forest, the wanderlust in the gaze the women, and the mystic nature of their calmness (or flirtatiousness) has us wondering what’s next for them along their journey, and keeps us coming back for more.

See her work below or on her site here. Follow her on Facebook and check out her store.
