Now this is some brilliant interactive marketing! When they wanted to pump up their slumping mid-day sales, Korean retailer Emart launched a highly unique and creative way to bring customers into the store and get them shopping online… and to do it they harnessed the power of the sun. How did I do it? They created a sculptural piece of marketing art which, much like a sundial, uses the angle of the sun to create a readable QR code at around noon each day. How clever is that??

The piece has been working brilliantly, drawing in curious observers from the street to test the strange use of technology and garnering the store new customers on a frequent basis. When passerby scan the shaded form of the QR code they are taken to the companies online storefront. There they can purchase items directly from their phone with the time sensitive “Sunny Sale” deals available only around noon when the shadows align to make to code active. What an appropriate, entertaining and impressive way to boost sales at a specific time of day!
