It’s no surprise that the United States is facing an alarming obesity problem (no surprise because most people can name the location of every fast food joint in town, but hit a wall when asked about the times and locations of their local farmers markets). It would be too quick and easy to blame individuals for eating too much and exercising too little, mainly because the causes are complex and involve many sometimes complex factors.
One of the most sickening things this graphic brings to light is the fact that 87% of the food and beverage ads seen by children ages 6-11 on TV are for products high in saturated fat, sugar, or sodium. The six companies who control nearly all of our mainstream media – see this Frugal Dad infographic – are bombarding people with unhealthy choices, and looking to make millions off of peoples poor eating and exercise choices. This is potentially making them the ‘Big Tobacco’ of our present era — and people need to realize this and start making better eating decisions before their food bites back.
