The Power of Wind: Bicycle Drafting a Truck at 55mph

:THE INCREDIBLE HUMAN SERIES: click here to see more from the series

A few days ago this video came across my radar. It is a man drafting behind a semi truck at 55 mph. That is right, on a bike, keeping up with a truck on the highway at 55 mph! It is insane to watch how the bicyclist hardly has to work to stay in the draft behind the truck. That is the power of wind, and with the tornadoes and hurricanes that have devastated the United States in the last handful of years it is a force that we often underestimate.

Buildings Spray Paint Stenciled on Old Cardboard

While these may look like photographs of large apartment blocks from Eastern Europe, what you are actually seeing are highly detailed artwork on common cardboard. That’s right, Berlin based artist Evol takes discarded pieces of cardboard, tape and grease pen markings intact, and spray paints near photo-realistic windows, doors and light posts with stencils on their corrugated sides. Surprisingly, the many layered paintings on the rough texture come off looking much like the beige facades of well worn buildings in pre-gentrified East Germany.

The Nostalgic Streets of Sao Paulo

If you find yourself in Sao Paulo, Brazil, make sure to take notice of the stunning 3D perspective murals that fill the city. As you roam the streets you can catch a glimpse of history walking alongside you; murals of people from another time, old cars, and old buildings. These murals display a sense of realism that draw the viewer in to another time and give a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era. The artwork has been inspired by many different Mexican and Brazilian artists, but are painted by only one man.

Got Old Phonebooks? Make Art Out Of Them!

Texas based photographer Cara Barer uses old phone books, computer manuals, maps, and comic books to create hypnotic sculptures, which she then photographs. Her inspiration came when she saw a rain-soaked Yellow Pages lying on the ground. She photographed its intricately bent pages and soon began the search for more books, and more methods to change their appearance. She realized she owned many books that were no longer of use to her or to anyone else. She soaked the manual for Windows 95 in the bathtub for a few hours, then gave it a new shape and purpose. Half Price Books became a regular haunt, and once an abandoned house gave her a set of outdated reference books, complete with mold and a storied history of neglect.

The Kiwis have been getting more and more attention over the years. Lord of the Rings was filmed on their island, the Flight of the Concords enlightened us to the nuances of New Zealand culture, and over the years the islands to the South have continued as one of the top tourist destinations in the world. So for those considering a flight down to explore the islands, Air New Zealand has made the experience lighthearted like much of their culture is. The new safety videos for the planes have been reworked to give passengers a laugh instead of a snooze when watching the required safety briefing before the flight.
