Rock N’ Roll: Cool Illustrations and Tunes by Mcbess

Tuesday 03.20.2012 , Posted by

McBess is a French illustrator currently residing in London. His work is loaded with so much swagger and rock n’ roll attitude you find yourself wanting more than anything for his characters to be real — flesh and blood. You’ll wish you could slam a cold one and cheer them on like the garage rock gods they are; a beer swilling version of the Gorillaz. Mcbess is known for mainly working in black and white, which is 10x more rock n’ roll than working in color. McBess began drawing at an early age, and carried it over into his adult life. He studied the third dimension of drawing and animation at art school, and falls for the second dimension pretty hard as well. [Read more...]

All I Own: Peoples Possessions Up Against the Wall

Monday 03.19.2012 , Posted by

What would everything you own look like against one wall? Photographer Sannah Kvist gave her subjects a simple but fun assignment: take all your worldly possessions and build a sculpture in any way you want. In the case of some, that sculpture might look like a mountain, but in the case of these young people from Sweden, they just have a small pile. All of her subjects where born in the 80′s, which is part of the charm of the portraits and an explanation of why they own so few things. [Read more...]

Endearing Monster Drawings Pop From the Screen

It seems like the web is being overrun by animates GIF images, from short movie clips to 3D photographs that trick us into seeing all their dimensions… but to see an artist who makes his own artwork look 3D, that is very unique. These imaginative images look a lot like a cross between the cartoon work of Matt Groening and the linear qualities of the late Maurice Sendak, complete with friendly looking monsters. Seattle based illustrator/artist Dain Fagerholm has taken his original pen based artwork and remixed it in stereographic GIF form, giving his images the pop of simulated 3D. [Read more...]

Out on the island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean resides artist Toni Demuro. She is an illustrator whose minimalist style and color come out wonderfully in her art. Over the past year, she has been doing pieces revolving around figures with radios for heads (any inspiration from the band?). These art pieces are aptly titled Face Radio # 1 to #5 and were all posted this year on her blog. They all display a vintage radio from the past century replacing the facial features on various fashionable persons. [Read more...]

Been Everywhere: Johnny Cash Inspired Luggage Labels

Monday 03.19.2012 , Posted by

Ongoing design projects have been all the rage lately amongst the design community, and this luggage label project in particular has been getting a lot of viewers and designers very excited. The Been Everywhere Project was born out of graphic designer and illustrator, Adrian Walsh‘s, love for Johnny Cash’s music. After hearing the song “I’ve Been Everywhere” in his music queue, he came up with the brilliant idea of creating a project where he would invite talented artists to take part and design luggage labels for each of the 92 locations Cash mentions in the song. Once the project started, just as Walsh had hoped, designers began choosing places that meant something to them personally. Whether it was where they grew up, had family, visited, etc., each label so far has been very unique and meaningful. [Read more...]
