Nat Geo’s Extreme Photo of the Week

In 2009 National Geographic announced they were ceasing the print version of their Adventure magazine. The incredible publication has showcased everything from extreme adventurers and explorers to more accessible adventure themed vacations for readers. As the landscape of publishing has changed, finding advertisers for such a niche magazine became increasingly difficult and so, the decision became final — the magazine was to find its home solely online. This is a similar story for many publications in recent times. Even the NY times laid off 10 long time staff photographers because of declining ad sales in the print publication. Is this all bad? With changing times also come new types of media.

National Geographic Adventure has focused a lot of energy on the website since its birth as the main outlet of the publication. Their Extreme Photo of the Week series came out of this rebirth, created as an awe inspiring collection of the wildest athletes paired up with the most talented photographers. The series is more than just a collection of photos, in that each one comes with a story and an explanation of how the photo was captured. So, for those aspiring action sports photographers, this is a good place to get some pointers.

It is never a good thing to see a classic publication shut down the tradition of a great printed magazine, but they are transitioning gracefully into the digital age by showcasing even more incredible videos, photography and writing than the printed edition purveyed. The end of the printed edition strikes a personal note for me, as the final issue was my feature as the adventurer of the year. The end of that era created a fear that perhaps people are caring less and less about exploration and adventure, but with the new iPad apps and digital versions that fear continues to change from fear to excitement. National Geographic continues to push the limits of capturing life around the planet.
