If Social Media Could Predict Oscar Winners

Social media has become a major sounding board for opinions and trends relating to society’s never-ending fascination with popular culture. Social media platforms have been buzzing with commentary and speculation about the Oscar nominees. Everyone is weighing in on who they believe to be the frontrunner in winning the most coveted prize in Hollywood on Sunday night, regardless of how much the film made at the box office.

The nominees who are garnering the most buzz for “Best Picture” weren’t exactly the highest grossing at the box office, which leads us to believe that social media isn’t exactly a popularity contest decider when it comes to film. People are genuinely voicing their opinions on what they felt was the best picture of the year, and are pegging the Best Picture award to go to The Artist, which is hovering below average when it comes to gross revenue. Entertainment Weekly tracks the ranking predictions about Oscar nominees every year, and in most instances the nominee with the most social buzz is not trending the highest in Oscar predictions.
