With its roots dating back to the Ancient Roman fertility festival, Lupercalia, and the 400 A.D. Saint Valentine martyrs, Valentine’s Day has come a long way. Valentine’s Day has become one of the most romantic days of the year, if not the most financially driven, with couples in the United States showering their loved ones with flowers, gifts, chocolates, cards, dinners, and sparkling wine.

According to the graphic below, men are looking to shell out almost double what women are looking to spend this year. You know those Sweethearts candies that come in the rectangular box with cute sayings and a chalky aftertaste? Fun fact: 8 billion of them are produced annually and most are sold between January 1st and February 14th. So, if you come across those candies in a 99cent store in July, well… we won’t say anything if you want to give them a shot, in fact, we encourage you to find out if their flavor could stay true during a zombie apocalypse.
