A lot of the time you come across art that is junk, but here, Tom Deininger’s pieces prove that not all junk art is trash. When he opened his studio near Fall River, MA in 1999, Deininger began sculpting. Throughout the years he has collected anything the average person would throw away, considering it valuable art creating material, not junk at all. His vision for the discarded rubbish was something completely different: to create sculptures – very large, amazingly painterly masterpieces. [Read more...]

Most future predictions from 100 years ago include flying cars for the daily commute to work, a robot servant for every family and full meals taken in the form of tiny pills. It’s not exactly the world we’re living in today. This surprising list, however – an article from The Ladies’ Home Journal in 1900 – gets a surprisingly large part of the last hundred years correct… right down to what has become the internet and fast food! Compared to the US: What Percentage Income Are You?

Monday 01.16.2012 , Posted by

With all the talk about the 1% in recent months, it’s been pretty common to wonder where we all measure up compared to that famous percentage of wealth. To help answer the question, the New York Times has put out two graphics analyzing what the wealth distribution of the nation really looks like. The first is a detailed interactive graphic allowing you to directly compare your household income to the national average, state averages and even your local county. By inputting your household income, the graphic generates your percentage compared to the area you select. The second graphic, a colorful grid, examines which professions hold the highest percentage and number of 1 percent-ers in that field in the nation. [Read more...]

A Hobbit Home for Under $5000

Monday 01.16.2012 , Posted by

With nothing more than hand tools, friends, family and a desire to avoid an expensive, unsustainable home, Simon Dale built his own. As a staunch advocate for low impact living, and with only a meager income, 32 year-old Dale decided to build a home in a hillside in Wales, one that he and his family could own outright and was sustainably hand-built directly in the middle of the forest. The design has an uncanny resemblance to Hobbit homes in the Lord of the Rings films, which has contributed to its rise in popularity. [Read more...]

It May Be Time to Take Candy From These Babies

Sunday 01.15.2012 , Posted by

In this hilarious print ad campaign by Dentsu South America, adorable images of “drunken” toddlers are used to sell chocolates infused with Jack Daniels whiskey. L’Univers de Chocolat is a highly regarded French confectionary in Sao Paolo, Brazil, started by Chef Nicolas Galland. Dentsu has been the world’s largest single-brand advertising company for almost 40 years and this “Funny Baby” campaign won the creative directors, Felipe Cama and Alexandre Lucas, a Gold Outdoor Lion at Cannes National Advertising Festival 2010. These charming pictures were photographed by Rogério Miranda, who was voted the 13th best advertising photographer in the world in 2004, by Archive magazine. While some may find the inebriated baby ads controversial, I can’t help but wonder where I can get some of these chocolates. [Read more...]
