If you’re looking to stream the latest Harry Potter or Transformers movie tonight, Netflix is not the way to go. Tristan Louis was recently wondering where the latest hit movies where available to watch instantly… and his resulting research shows that Netflix is seriously lagging behind it’s competition – Amazon, iTunes and Vudu. In fact, as you can tell in the chart below by Flowing Data, Netflix only offers a sad 5 hit titles from 2011 out of the top 100… compare that to Amazon’s 45 titles, and the others just behind at 44. Chilean illustrator, Fabian Ciraolo, has turned our historical icons into hipsters, and he’s done it in style. View Frida as the bad girl, Dali in a cut off shirt and tight jeans, the Dalai Lama rockin’ his boombox, Che Guevara in his bomber jacket waiting to run the pool table and Cleopatra being risqué in a leopard print top! You can find more of this pop culture artwork on Ciraolo’s blog. [Read more...]

The Puke State? Old Nicknames of US States Told by Pigs

Monday 01.23.2012 , Posted by

How far we have come in modern advertising… and how much we’re missing! Nearly 130 years ago W.H. Hill & Co produced this colorful pig-themed example of cartography, featuring the states and territories of 1884′s America. “Sole manufacturers of Hill’s Hog Ringers, Hill’s Triangular Rings, Calf & Cow Weaners, Stock Markers, etc,” the map is a perfect example of early day product placement, although a subtle one: each of the featured hogs has the companies unique triangular ring in its little snout (even the curtain is held back by their signature triangles). If you are into real estate and looking for a real fixer upper, check out these abandoned estates once belonging to some of Mexico’s most nasty criminals. The movies aren’t the only way we can see how infamous crime men truly reside. Over the past 6 years Mexico has seized over 114 million items belonging to incarcerated drug lords. Wanting no paper trail to their names of course, most dealers will walk into high end shops for jewelry, furniture, art, cars, exotic animals, etc., and order one of everything. Limited time and the risk of getting caught makes most of these estates look as if they were turned into a storage unit to hold anything gold, sparkling and symbolizing power. Many of the drug lords lived in extremely terrible conditions despite the luxurious first impression: the inside of some estates have been full of broken needles, trash, prostitutes and a family trying to live the life their loved one has chosen for them. Monday 01.23.2012 , Posted by

If you ever get tired of boring, flat charts in a presentation, then you may want to look at them in 3D and 4D.  An new application called DataAppeal could make the lives of researchers, students, developers, governments, and business representatives much easier; and their data much more understandable. DataAppeal is web-based application, based off of GoogleMaps, that allows the user to map and complete geographic analysis using data, and visualize it in 3D and 4D models. It allows people to represent data in a new way that makes it easier to understand and actually see. Nadia Amoroso, one of the creators of the application says “[DataAppeal] allows the transformation and interpretation of information to be intuitive, understandable, straightforward and fun.” Amoroso answered some of my questions below: [Read more...]
