Make a Wish on an Welsh Money Tree

An old tradition from Great Britain has been rediscovered after a curious incident recently covered by the BBC. Staff at the Italian Riviera inspired Welsh village of Portmeirion where baffled after a tree was cut down and soon started filling up with coins hammered into its trunk. “We had no idea why it was being done when we first noticed the tree trunk was being filled with coins,” said Meurig Jones, the Estate manager. Abbey Road Gets A Live Webcam!

Few if any street crossings can claim the same world renown as the one on Abbey Road. The famous “zebra crossing,” known for gracing the cover of the Beatles 1969 album Abbey Road, has become something of a pilgrimage for fans the world over. They arrive daily to capture similar pictures of themselves crossing the street in iconic Fab Four fashion, sometimes by themselves, sometimes in groups numbering in the hundreds. Now Abbey Road Studios, the building credited with most of the Beatles albums and single recordings (along with many acts like Pink Floyd and Badfinger) has installed a live webcam facing the famous street crossing. In 2008 British technical creative director, Matthew Knight, had a unique idea: start leaving disposable cameras out for the public with instructions to be picked up, used to capture a couple of pictures and then passed on to others. Simply a microphone connected to a computer, by affixing the devise to nearly any surface you can turn it into a gesture based touch interface! When I first ran across these cosmically captivating animations by Ignacio Torres, I was sure the sparkling clouds in the images where created on a computer… it really surprised me when I found out they are actually made of colored dust and reflective confetti! Torres, a recent photography graduate from the University of North Texas, began the project with the idea in mind that all human life is ultimately made of cosmic matter, the result of a stars death. Built with almost no regard for the hills that dominate its landscape, San Francisco’s grid like street layout and near vertical roads are unique in the world of cities. The “City by the Bay” really started growing after the California gold rush started booming in the late 1840′s, so by the time the gorgeous map featured here was made in 1912, the city looked remarkably like it does today. What was missing were many of the attractions the city is now best known for: noticeably absent is Pier 39 and the very crooked section of Lombard Street.
