A QR Code Built From Everyday Objects

Thursday 12.15.2011 , Posted by

QR codes seem to be cropping up everywhere you look, from tags in electronics stores to flyers stapled to telephone poles… so it’s really nice to see this completely original project from David Sykes. To promote his newly launched website, Sykes created an 8 foot square model of a QR code using objects sourced directly from his studio. He then photographed the ‘cityscape’ of stuff from above and made 8×10 prints retaining the full frame of the shot. By including the studio floor and rebates in the image, he gave the whole piece a further sense of depth. Possibly my favorite aspect of the project was the mysterious way each print arrived at it’s recipient: in an anonymous photograph mailer with no mention of who it was from. Brilliant! Thursday 12.15.2011 , Posted by

Currently exhibiting at Museum für Kunst Und Gewerbe Hamburg in Germany, an intriguing new show features a retrospective look at the vast collection of the industrial design works Jonathan Ive has created for Apple throughout the years.  So vast in fact, that they claim to be showcasing every product Apple has created under Ive. Along with the extensive and sometimes rather obscure collection of products, the museum takes a deeper look into the cultural aspects of the designs and the process behind the design of Apple products. Hey Robot, Make Me A Sandwich!

Wednesday 12.14.2011 , Posted by

Robots have come such a long way in recent years, it seems like it won’t be long before they’re helping out in every household. The idea of having a helper around is pretty intriguing, but we don’t want then to always do the same thing, like a dishwasher or a toaster; we want something smarter, far more helpful and talented. While robots have long been doing things that humans can do by following a set of strictly defined programs, it hasn’t been until recently that they began doing tasks using their own senses and choices. Dencity: What Does 7 Billion Look Like?

Wednesday 12.14.2011 , Posted by

The earth recently passed a huge milestone: an estimated 7 billion people now inhabit our home planet. That number is nothing to blink an eye at, yet most maps displaying the population of the world make little visual reverence to how astounding that mass of people really appears: enter a new map called Dencity. NOT JUST A CROSSWORD PUZZLE

Wednesday 12.14.2011 , Posted by

Christian Svanes Kolding, a director of media objects and films, recently created a clever crossword puzzle/QR Code mashup for his film THE THINGS WE KEEP. The piece was part of the TALK TO ME exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in NY which used QR codes for each of its objects to give visitors easy access to more information on each item they viewed. Kolding’s dual purpose crossword design was in actuality a working QR Code and allowed museum visitors to watch his film on their smart phones (something not possible to do in the gallery without it). Camer1: San Francisco Graffiti Artist Spotlight

Wednesday 12.14.2011 , Posted by

Camer1 (better known as Cameron Moberg) is one of the most unique graffiti artists in San Francisco today. Camer1 serves and loves the San Francisco community where he has lived most of his life and where he has developed his graffiti art on the streets. He doesn’t have to run from the police for tagging some abandoned city walls (though those adolescent days may have existed..) but rather Camer1 gets commissioned to create some beautiful graffiti murals…and that is just what Camer1 wants to do: to paint and express his art. Through his art, he hopes to communicate messages of hope, love and unity. [Read more...]

Watch Out For Falling Bar Graphs!

Wednesday 12.14.2011 , Posted by

We get a real kick out of data visualization here at Visual News, so when we ran across these disaster themed commercials featuring an avalanche of falling bar graphs and molten pie chart pools striking the city, we had to laugh. Produced by Anonymous Content, the series is titled It Can Happen and features one clever hook of a catch line at the end. The first advert is quite a bit more effective in our opinion, featuring no dialog to distract from the data disaster befalling the city, while the following two examples rely on witty dialog to more obviously convey the point. Which ever you prefer, the animations are well done and highly effective. [Read more...]
