ART PROJECT BEAUTIFIES URBAN SAN JOSE

Few people can imagine a positive change in their minds and then pursue the steps necessary to make it happen. Tina Morrill is one such innovator. While taking classes at San Jose State for public administration, Morrill had an idea that would change the look of downtown San Jose. Having seen utility boxes painted by artists in Edmonton, Canada, she was inspired to bring the innovation to urban San Jose, California.

Calling her dream the Art Box Project SJ, Morrill became a community activist, determined to find a way to make her idea come to pass without money from taxpayers. For each box, she first approaches local neighborhood groups to gain contributions toward a nearby box conversion. Next, she recruits an artist to paint the utility box with images that focus on reflecting the feel and flavor of the neighborhood. The result is a beautiful piece of artwork replacing what was once just an ugly, grey utility box. So far, the responses to her work have been very positive, with local people appreciating the art, and taggers refraining from covering the boxes with graffiti. According to the Contra Costa Times, a similar project in Hayward California has reduced graffiti problems on their city utility boxes by 97%! Clearly, Morrill’s undertaking will be very valuable to the community!

The Art Box Project needs sponsors! For more information or to contribute to this awesome community project, check out their Facebook page:
