People around the world have aspirations to create happily sustainable, affordable communities, but often the lack of construction grade tools and vehicles derail their efforts: enter the Global Village Construction Set. The project was started by Open Source Ecology, a network of farmers, engineers and supporters. Together they are bringing to life a modular, DIY, low-cost, open source, high-performance platform that allows for the easy fabrication of the 50 different industrial machines that it takes to build a small, sustainable civilization with modern comforts. That’s a mouthful, but this big project is making great progress and getting much deserved attention. [Read more...]

Beauty Captured By Google Street View

Tuesday 11.22.2011 , Posted by

It’s hard to believe these dreamy photographs came from the top of a speeding Google Street View car, but that’s just where photographer Aaron Hobson found them. The images follow in the footsteps of his ongoing “Cinemascapes” series, where like a landscape loving Cindy Sherman, he creates wide format images that appear to have jumped from the silver screen. Until 1989, the USSR was a dominant world superpower, however their communist system kept tight reigns on what could go in and out of the country. Starting in 1957, the space race between the USA and Russia had the two countries competing for supremacy in space exploration.  This competition led both countries to push innovation and science in education. Wes Anderson Makes Campy Commercials

Monday 11.21.2011 , Posted by

Wes Anderson, director and writer of such campy, understated films as The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou… also makes commercials. His signature stage-like transitions, frank dialogue and retro aesthetic make him highly unique and have garnered him a strong following of loyal fans. That signature style has made it into most of the commercials found here, created for the likes of AT&T, Stella Artois, Ikea and even ex-presidential candidate John McCain (humorously made when he was lagging in the polls). It’s just a taste of what we might expect from Anderson’s next release, Moonrise Kingdom, in 2012. [Read more...]

Very few people can say they have climbed Mt. Everest… even fewer can say they have skydived Mt. Everest. The first successful climb of the world’s highest peak was in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, when famously Sir Hillary insisted that Norgay take the last steps to the summit, so that neither could claim to be the first on their own.  Since then, many more have reached the summit — blind people, disabled people and more. It was not until 55 years after the first successful climb that someone decided that skydiving the peak was in order. [Read more...]

Organic Art: Houses Woven with Sticks

Monday 11.21.2011 , Posted by

For the past 25 years, Pacific northwest artist Patrick Dougherty has been creating beautiful, biologically based sculptures out of an unusual material: the twigs and branches of saplings. His gracefully curving architectural forms organically merge with their surroundings, opening their large doors and windows to explorative passerby. The fragile looking pieces appear both as if they are rooted in the ground and floating above it… only when venturing close do you see their woven, basket-like strength. [Read more...]
