Back in the 70s, a Frenchman named Philippe Petit bravely and illegally walked a tightrope between the World Trade Center towers in New York. He was arrested for this stunt, but his legacy lives on in the documentary about his exhilarating accomplishment: Man on Wire. Now, a new incarnation of tightrope walking has been born.  Instead of using a wire, a 1-inch piece of high strength nylon climbing webbing is the material of choice and, because of the increased flexibility of the webbing, the sport has been dubbed Slacklining. Popular with climbers for decades as a method to improve balance, Slacklining has caught on and now has international competitions with stunts like backflips, spins and a variety of other incredible feats of balance. A Nearly Life-Sized Los Angeles Made of Cardboard

Friday 11.25.2011 , Posted by

Los Angeles is a city of colorful extremes: at once a exotic star filled architectural playground and sprawling urban jungle of low-slung suburbia. Taking her cues from the less opulent spots in the city, artist Ana Serrano has created a colorful, nearly life-sized version of the place she was born and raised… out of cardboard. Her large, room filling work, features the myriad storefronts you would find wandering the streets of LA, from nail salons, to liquor stores and sex shops, all with their signature hand-painted signage, sparse plant life and brilliant paint jobs. This isn’t the high end of the city, but it’s certainly full of life and character. [Read more...]

Live Animation of a Bicycle Wheel

Thursday 11.24.2011 , Posted by

As if by magic, these bicycle wheels by Katy Beveridge jump to animated life when filmed. How is this possible? Each frame of the video captures a still picture of the spinning wheel, so as the different sides of the cut out shapes pass they are captured in the same place creating the appearance of movement. It’s interesting to note that this can’t be seen with the naked eye… only when the wheel is captured on film does the effect appear. How cool too that one of Beveridge’s animations hit the front page of Reddit the other day. Well done! [Read more...]

Wednesday 11.23.2011 , Posted by

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! It’s the time of year in the US when waistlines widen, the kitchen smells it’s best and there’s only one thing that has to be on the table… a great big turkey! Over 240 million of the birds were raised in the US last year alone… and that kind of demand has led to some major changes in the way that the birds are raised. This graphic looks at some of the more strange things that go into a factory farmed bird… after reading it, that free-range, organic turkey at the market might look like a good option. The Flying Rhinos of South Africa

Wednesday 11.23.2011 , Posted by

When the WWF decided to start the seventh installment of their Black Rhino Range Expansion Project, they had a unique challenge transporting the critically endangered animals to their new expanded range. Because of extremely rough terrain between where the animal was captured and paved roads, off-road transportation by truck seemed too dangerous for the precious cargo. Instead, they decided to use a helicopter. Strapping webbing to each of the rhinoceros’ ankles, blindfolding and then tethering them to a hovering helicopter, the sleeping giants were airlifted the relatively short distance to waiting transport trucks for a smooth 1500km trip across the country to their new range. This beautiful film was created by Green Renaissance. Find more information about the Black Rhino Range Expansion Project at wwf.org.za. [Read more...]
