Floating 3D Portraits in Panes of Glass

Wednesday 11.30.2011 , Posted by

The heads of famous figures float quietly like holographic images in NFN Kalyan’s 3D glass sculptures. To create the effect, his works use multiple planes of glass with layers of the figures features meticulously etched into their surfaces. Viewed from directly ahead, the faces appear completely in 3D; only when the viewer moves to the side do the joined layers of glass begin to reveal the true nature of the illusion. [Read more...]

What happened to you on 11.11.11? It’s only once per century that this unique date passes. The One Day on Earth documentary project, founded by Kyle Ruddick asks just that. The unique project worked with documentary filmmakers, students, and other inspired citizens to record the human experience over a 24-hour period. This is the second installment of the project, which started in 2010, which has been used to create a fully interactive archive with photo galleries, blog posts, and a video archive map.  The map allows for a visual, searchable experience to answer that compelling question: What’s happening on the other side of the world right now? With the outbreak of the Somali Civil War in 1991, the country has seen two decades of some of the most violent and poverty stricken times in Africa’s history. With no central government to control the majority of Somalia, it is has been called a failed state. Beautiful Stop Motion Journey Using Google Maps

Tuesday 11.29.2011 , Posted by

A tiny desk toy takes a journey from the office to the Pacific coast, thanks to Google Maps. I can’t get over how well done this stop-motion animation was made… and how cleverly. A personal project of director Tom Jenkins, all imagery is seamlessly animated straight from the screen using stills in street view; there are no screen replacements. The office around the screen dances to life too, bringing motion and depth to the scene. It’s gorgeous and moving. [Read more...]

Frank R. Paul: A Cornerstone of Science Fiction Art

Monday 11.28.2011 , Posted by

The fantastic artwork of Frank R. Paul has had an undeniable influence on the world of Science Fiction. All the way back in 1926 his art was featured on the cover of the first issue of Amazing Stories, the first magazine dedicated to the genre. His bright, even garishly colored works featured fantastical monsters, aliens, imaginative spaceships and architecture… and a limited priority to draw human faces… all in a time when most of the American population didn’t even have a telephone. Later he would illustrate the very first cover of the iconic Marvel Comics, featuring none other than the Human Torch. [Read more...]
