Looking almost as if they where drawn with a pen, the string art of Debbie Smyth is amazingly detailed and very attractive. She uses metal pins pressed into white walls, lacing multi-colored thread between the points to create pieces that literally float off the surface. See more of her work, including some very clever designs for the Red Cross and New York Times, at debbie-smyth.com [Read more...]
Inspiration From Steve Jobs: Real Artists Ship
When it comes to good salesmanship and motivating speeches, few have rivaled the words of the late Steve Jobs. His slogan “Real Artists Ship” arose before the release of the now iconic first Mac, when the project was months overdue. The saying helped unite his workforce, pushing them to work nearly non-stop; toward the end even producing new release candidates of the operating system every few hours.
The nautically themed images featured here where created by designer Andrew Power. He’ll soon be offering prints, but for now you can get wallpaper for your computer or phone at dribbble.com. [Read more...]

Stone Fields: An Arrangement by Algorithm
What appear to be precisely arranged circles of rock are actually far more complicated than what meets the eye. Italian designer Giuseppe Randazzo was inspired by the outdoor rock sculptures of Richard Long, deciding to create his own renditions based on computer algorithms, some simple, some complex. The brilliant white ‘rocks’ in his pieces are actually photo-realistic computer renderings, lending a level of near imposible precision and beauty to the works. Find out more about his Stone Fields at novastructura.net. [Read more...]
Information With Every Sip: Infographic Wine Labels
The vintners at Australian winery Between Five Bells, have a very unique take on how to market a wine, giving buyers much more than simply a finely aged beverage. One thing that makes them stand out is their adherence to a policy of “transparency in winemaking;” meaning they share much of the recipe and growing conditions of their wine. In fact, long before knowing what to do with the data on their new 2010 Geelong Red, they kept careful notes on the conditions of vineyards, vintage conditions, ferments and finished wines. That knowledge has now been passed on to their customers in another unique move: labeling their new wine with a detailed infographic sharing the information. [Read more...]

How to make cameras auto-focus like eyes
A new algorithm suggests there is information lurking in images that cameras have yet to tap. Like a camera, the human eye has an auto-focusing system, but human auto-focusing rarely makes mistakes. And unlike a camera, humans do not require trial and error to focus an object. [Read more...]
Fun With Time: Moving Watch Sculptures
The tiny people in Dominic Wilcox’s sculptures are always very punctual. His “Watch Sculptures” place figures on the ticking hands of wrist and pocket watches, letting the two hands playfully bring the scene together every 60 seconds. See the interview at the bottom of this post, then head to dominicwilcox.com for more of his very unique works. [Read more...]
