French Toast and Hugs Change the World

Monday 10.17.2011 , Posted by

Birthed at Burning Man, Shyam Vasant Yadav started French Toast and Hugs (FTX) back in 2000. I had the pleasure of meeting Shyam at Burning Man 2009 as part of his very fun, welcoming camp and just being around this positive guy gave me a refreshing look at life. His happy perspective is infectious: from simple stories about his favorite slice of pizza to introducing me to the relaxing music of Hammock.

What a perfect person to start a project that hands out hugs and french toast at no cost, for the simple pleasure of making people happy. Together with his FTX gang (you get a numbered jersey for lending a hand or spatula), he has fed an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 people around the world: cities like Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Auckland, Santa Monica, New York, Melbourne and Jodphur. Expressions Of Love With A Nerdy Twist

Now here are some posters to warm the heart of any proud nerd! Nicole Martinez, an illustrator, art director and graphic designer from Boston says this of the inspiration behind the prints:

“My boyfriend and I came up with the phrase ‘nerdy dirty’ a while ago because we would say such nerdy things when we were trying to be romantic,” says Nicole. “So when I got the urge to design something sweet I could only think of things like ‘Aorta tell you how much I love you.’ Hence, the Nerdy Dirty poster series was born.”

An Abstract Spin on Superheroes

Saturday 10.15.2011 , Posted by

Superheroes continue to have a strong presence in pop culture, from Hollywood movies to high fashion, and now to watercolour-style digital art. Arian Noveir painted this series of abstract-style superhero paintings that include Spiderman, Batman, the Hulk, Wolverine, Ironman, Hell Boy and Thor. Although there is only a hint of each hero splattered on each image, it’s just the right amount needed to identify which character is represented — provided you’d recognize these heroes in their comic state, that is.

We love the way classic superheroes continue to inspire creatives like Noveir, a French web designer, as well as artists like Marko Manev whose super minimalist superhero posters were featured on Visual News a little while back [Read more...]
