A Modern Take on Ancient Art

Friday 10.28.2011 , Posted by

Looking like modern day mandalas and taking just as long to create, UK based artist Jake Lockett is the creator of these large and insanely detailed pieces. Exploring his works closely, figures, faces and eyes pop appear, giving the repeating patterns far more personality than their ancient counterparts. Lockett is currently accepting commissions for custom work while he makes progress on an upcoming animation (you can see tests for it at the bottom of this post). Head by his website jake-lockett.com for more of his illustration work, his tumblr blog, or see his newly created blog for frequent updates on the progress of his animation [Read more...]

Now Classic: Errol Morris Lives the High Life

Friday 10.28.2011 , Posted by

Roger Ebert once said, “After twenty years of reviewing films, I haven’t found another filmmaker who intrigues me more… Errol Morris is like a magician, and as great a filmmaker as Hitchcock or Fellini.” Perhaps best known for his documentary films such as The Fog of War and The Thin Blue Line, Morris has been honored with shelves worth of awards, including an Oscar. He has also directed a large collection of advertisements: here we bring you a sampling of what he considers his most impressive television achievement: over 100 retro-themed commercials for Miller Hi-Life. It’s a tribute to the classic American man [Read more...]

Google+ Shows the Ripples in the Social Pond

Thursday 10.27.2011 , Posted by

Personally, I believe that tracking the journey of public data in social networks is going to be a big trend in the near future. We will be able to track a piece of content (posts, images, videos, etc.), from its genesis to its multiple paths on public platforms like Twitter and Google Plus, seeing who connects with it, changes it or spreads it. TinEye, Google’s Search by Image, YouTube’s “this video was seen on” notice and now Google Ripples are great ways to track the path of a popular idea [Read more...]

Mega Time Lapse Video Of Burning Man

Thursday 10.27.2011 , Posted by

Burning Man, the huge annual festival held in the middle of the Nevada Desert, encourages an atmosphere of radical self expression and acceptance. Some say it is impossible to capture the experience on the flat playa, but this 19 minute time lapse video has come close to the feeling you get while you explore. We don’t have much information about who made this film but the description states it was created by James Cole, Jason Phipps and Byron Mason. We highly recommend playing it in 1080p HD and full screen. Captivating [Read more...]

Have you heard of a Hoodoo?

Bryce Canyon National Park (2 of 24)

In 1928 Bryce Canyon was officially named a national park. The majestic local is filled with giant rock formations called Hoodoos, lending the landscape a beautifully eerie feel; in fact, the early European settlers named the rocks after the word voodoo and the native Americans believed that the formations would come to life as giants that threw rocks to ward off intruders. Although called a ‘canyon’ the place is actually an amphitheater and was created from an entirely different process than the normal river erosion [Read more...]

A Photographic Alphabet Around the House

Wednesday 10.26.2011 , Posted by

Sure to please the typographer and photographer in all of us, Vienna born still-life photographer Bela Borsodi makes incredibly accurate letters from household items – very carefully arranged. Created for WAD Magazine #39, his photographs capture the objects in their 3D space, flattening their contrasting outlines to such an extent that it becomes difficult to separate letter from room. You can find more of Borsodi’s extensive editorial, advertising and film work at belaborsodi.com [Read more...]
