Newly Opened in 1905: A Trip On The New York Subway

Tuesday 09.13.2011 , Posted by

This vintage footage from the dawn of film takes us on a trip through the original New York Subway system. Filmed May 21, 1905, on the Interborough Subway as it travels from 14th St. to Central Station, the silent movie captures the subway just 7 months after it first opened and reveals glossy new trains with clean columned stations filled by victorian attired commuters. It must have been an exciting time.

The film was transferred from 35mm film taken from what appears to be a train following the one filmed. On the parallel track another train pulls a car lighting the dark tunnels for the film. Be sure to watch the end of the film as passengers, unsure what to make of the camera, depart and enter the train. [Read more...]

4 Years Early: The Back to the Future Nike MAG

Monday 09.12.2011 , Posted by

There was one sneaker to own in 1989 and you had to travel to the future to get a pair: Marty McFly’s futuristic, self-lacing, 2015 Nike MAG’s from Back To The Future II. Now, good news for those who have been drooling for the last 22 years: Nike recently created a kicking real life version of the famous and unobtainable sneaker, featuring sweet LED lighted emblems, the iconic teal-flecked gray sole and wrap around cuff. Sadly self-lacing didn’t make it into this edition, but maybe we’ll see that when 2015 really rolls around.

Getting your hands on a pair of the shoes will be challenging. Nike has released just 1500 pairs to the public via eBay auction, with 150 pairs going online for each of 10 days. Appropriately, 100% of proceeds from this very cool project go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Get your pair now! [Read more...]

Campy Pop Culture Subway Posters From 70′s Japan

Monday 09.12.2011 , Posted by

These vintage subway posters from 1970′s and 1980′s Japan playfully use a host of pop culture icons to encourage proper etiquette while boarding and riding the countries many punctual trains. Charlie Chaplin’s fuhrer reminds us not to take up too much space, Superman wishes he hadn’t stepped in your gum and John Wayne lets us know when it’s smoke free time. This collection of posters is originally from the book Manner Poster 100, published in 1983. [Read more...]

A Journey from Pop Culture to Wild Africa

Some of the most interesting stories begin with a realization.  Often these realizations take people on dramatic detours or alternate paths from their careers, life plans or dreams.  Nick Brandt is an amazing extension of a realization turned into a new career, turned into a foundation.  After moving to the United States in 1992, he managed a successful career in video production, working with artists like Jewel, Moby, and even Michael Jackson.

Satellite killers: Meteoroids vs. space junk

Friday 09.09.2011 , Posted by

At any given time there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 22,000 pieces of debris 10 centimeters or larger zipping along in orbit at speeds of seven kilometers per second, according to the U.S. Air Force. But Sigrid Close, an assistant professor of aeronautics and astronautics at Stanford University, says billions of very tiny meteoroids do more damage to satellites and other spacecraft than all the space junk orbiting Earth. The Making of an Infographic: Visualizing US/China Trade

Thursday 09.08.2011 , Posted by

Awhile back, our friend Jess created a visually stimulating infographic for Mint.com on US/China trade patterns. As you would imagine the numbers are a little lopsided in favor of China and it’s easy to see this in the clearly detailed sankey diagram and geographic area charts (red denoting imports and green being exports). Also interesting for all you design folks, is a video Jess put together showing a video capture of the many steps that go into creating such a fine work. [Read more...]

It’s Great to Be Alive! Shocking 1950s Kids Into Safety

Thursday 09.08.2011 , Posted by

I’m pretty sure it’s not what the original author was going for, but this vintage childrens safety manual still has me laughing at the crazy images and captions. Each illustration features Dick and Jane type comments about kids getting into this trouble or that… some advice still fits today; others like getting locked in a refrigerator have luckily passed. If I was a kid in the 50′s, this pamflet would have been a real keeper! [Read more...]

The Muppets in Classic Fairytales

Steal from the rich and give to the fuzzy! Illustrator David Petersen has turned out some superb Muppet renditions of three classic fairytales: Snow White, Robbin Hood and King Arthur. Also included but not fairytale status: some Peter Pan swashbuckling. I think Kermit the Frog looks quite dashing as Robin Hood and Miss Piggy is a perfect evil queen from Snow White. For more of Petersen’s excellent work, including his award winning comic series Mouse Guard, see davidpetersen.net. [Read more...]
