At the red hot temperature of 2100 degrees Fahrenheit, Japanese artist Etsuko Ichikawa draws molten glass snakes over paper to create what she calls, pyrographs. The abstract, curvaceous forms are scorched into the paper in shades from brown to black as she spreads, presses and loops the glowing mass over the floor.
“The way I work with glass is almost opposite to what glass artists do,” she says. “Compared to a maestro, I am a really bad student – I have no control and I’m not interested in developing my technique.”
For the technique she uses, see the beautiful video interview below, or for the performance pictured above see the video at the bottom of the page. Head to etsukoichikawa.com for more on this very different and exciting artist.

truly exciting videography and lighting, with good musical background do not make up for a false sense of accomplishment.
I have been doing glass work for over 30 years now and have seen many differing approaches to the ART of making beautiful glass. I wish MS Ichikawa all the luck in the world in trying to gain her 15 minutes of fame..but …burned paper using molten glass is not “ART”…neither is the result of a baby throwing wet cereal at a wall or floor…..
“ART” dealers can be fooled into believing almost any thing if it will gain them some financial noteriety . If you..Ms Ichikawa want to use glass as your means …create something instead of destroying something……
Dude thats the most amazing thing I have ever seen!

OMG. That is soooo awesome. Im surprised the paper just gets scorched rather than catching fire.
To each their own. I thought it was cool. Duke, sorry that you’re so bitter from your fail career as a glass blower. Part of art is destruction. It’ not always about money.
