Mongolia: A Gift of Instant Memories
Vanessa Hollander and Wilson Philippe are two clever teenagers who love photography and dream to someday travel all corners of the world, meet awesome people and document their adventures. They are off to a great start with their new video: Mongolia. Armed with Polaroid cameras, the two went on a 10 day motorcycle tour, delivering the gift of instant images to the remote people of the country. The families they visited were delighted to have their pictures taken and made sure to dress up for the occasion. [Read more...]
The Disciples: Fans of the Band
Esteemed photographer James Mollison spent over three years outside different concert venues, capturing the varied fans and their wild attire. During the project, he noticed different “tribes” of people, emulating the celebrities and bonding with other fans in what he calls “surrogate families.” It was a chance to belong, relive their youth and enjoy the art of musicians they revere. See more of this work, or get his book The Disciples at jamesmollison.com. [Read more...]
Snap Shots: Hitchhiking Across the USA
Using over 3000 photographs, Benjamin Oliver Jenks has put together a stop motion film about his hitchhiking journey across the USA. Having done this adventure myself, I think he has really captured what it feels like to cross the continent, randomly meeting new friends, sharing stories and creating fond memories. Want more hitchhiking inspiration? Check out the time I hitched across the USA dressed as a monk or watch the excellent series Thumbs Up by David Choe. [Read more...]
The Sleek Racing Yachts of Old New York
In an era before the automobile or airplane, the sleek and graceful racing yachts of 1890s New York were the real hot ticket. Pushing the limits of sailor and machine, they battled it out in hotly contested titles like the newly founded America’s Cup. They flew as much sail as possible, stretching the often experimental boats so far that masts sometimes came crashed down in the process. The expensive sport was a hangout of the upper class and the culture was as lavish on land as on sea. [Read more...]

Pyrographs: Painting With Fiery, Molten Glass
At the red hot temperature of 2100 degrees Fahrenheit, Japanese artist Etsuko Ichikawa draws molten glass snakes over paper to create what she calls, pyrographs. The abstract, curvaceous forms are scorched into the paper in shades from brown to black as she spreads, presses and loops the glowing mass over the floor. [Read more...]
Changing Fortune: Explore the Fortune 500 from 1955
This highly informative and interactive graphic looks at the ups and downs of the successful American companies on the Fortune 500 list, all the way back to 1955. It’s been a wild and exciting ride. Ben Fry, the pieces creator, was inspired to create the graphic when he ran across a huge set of data tracking the famous index: he challenged himself to come up with a way of displaying those 84,000 data points in an easily viewed and navigated interactive piece. We think he did an excellent and informative job.
Tracked in the graphic are: rank on the list, revenue and profit. One interesting thing to notice is the clear effects of recession on some companies profits (as seen in Ford Motors below), while other companies are largely unaffected by the dips of the economy. Head over to Fathom, Fry’s information design company, to get a closer look at the graphic. [Read more...]
