Herbert Matter is known in the design world as a designer’s designer. The Visual Language Of Herbert Matter is a fascinating look at the life story of a highly influential mid-century modern design master. Swiss born, Herbert Matter revolutionized the design world by augmenting photography as a design tool. His relationship with using the camera as art never stopped, and bringing the scope of fine art into the arena of applied arts changed the game forever.

Herbert Matter was taught by the artists Fernand Léger, Le Corbusier, and A.M. Cassandre in late 1920′s Paris. He created the infamous Swiss Travel posters that Swatch Watches ripped off in 1986, and his designs pioneered the use of photo-montage and type. The coolest aspect of Herbert Matter is that he was also a true artist; who spent his time creating covers for Vogue and Arts & Architecture, crafting sensational photographs, as well as documenting his artist contemporaries Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Alberto Giacometti.
