It’s the childhood dream of many girls to become a Disney princess… and now photographer Ryan Astamendi is giving a few grown women the chance. His series of surprisingly accurate photographs puts models into pitch perfect costume, makeup and hair to create what looks like the movie screen come to life. As you will see in the photographs below, the models vary in their real-life likeness to the characters, proving that Astamendi is skillful at creating the look he desires.

Astamendi says of the sleeping beauty photo shoot, “I put between 30 and 40 hours of work into this, which seems to be the norm for these Disney character projects.” What really surprised him about the project? The models name was actually… Princess!

What’s next in the series? He’s currently finishing up work on Rapunzel. Be sure to check out his website RyPhoto for future updates or see the the book The Art of the Disney Princess which features his work. And one more thing: not every girl wants to be a princess… so we included Astamendi’s stunning rendition of the seductive Jessica Rabbit.

Yep, not every girl wants to be a princess… so here’s Astamendi’s imaginative rendition of seductive Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Up next for Astamendi? Rapunzel is in the works… and this model is unique: she actually works as Rapunzel at Disneyland!

  1. Very artistically done, great shots. I can’t believe all these idiots complaining about the “wrong races” being used. I think all the girls look fantastic in the roles they shot pictures for. If anything, Disney is supposed to be for ALL girls, not just whites and I AM white! Why can’t a black girl for instance feel connected to or want to be Snow White? Just because she’s a different color of skin, should it make a difference? These race issues need to get turned on their head so everyone just stops thinking about it all the time and accepts humans for being humans. I think these shots, novel as they may be, are a great step in that direction.

  2. Wow! Pocahontas is gonna haunt my dreams tonight!!

  3. Dammmmm
    mmm Jessica Rabbit ;P

  6. Of course you can. Thanks.

  7. Do Alice in Wonderland!

  8. Just had a conversation about this the other day regarding who was the hottest. I think this puts it into perspective…

  9. These models are absolutely beautiful! Princess Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) looks exactly like the animated one! Looking forward to seeing other models in these roles (how about the male roles as well?… Tarzan, Aladdin, Jafar, Shang…)

  10. soooo ladies im single….just saying….. ;)

  11. hello , i have been searching for u i love u do you no who i am guess your biggest fan

  12. Oh my gosh, this is awesome. You should really do Ariel.

@Alice Campbell : Alice is not one of the Disney Princess. You could see the Disney Princess list here : http://www.rapunzelfromtangled.com/rapunzel-from-tangled-as-10th-disney-princess/

  15. are you going to do princess tiana that would be really great.!

  16. very nice work by the make up artist.nothing more.
its truly wonderfull what a bit of powder and paint can do for a girl!
    oh,and dont forget the hairdresser!!!

  17. SMH @ at these racist morons complaining about the ‘wrong races’….sad.

  18. Aurora blew my mind! Captured the nature of the princess perfectly

  19. I understand that some folks want us all to just look beyond race already. Never mind that the whole point of fighting racism is that no one is inferior or superior just because of their race–that sort of attitude is what “colorblind” actually means, not pretending that we’re all white now. I do understand that some people just want to look beyond because they’re tired of race being a big deal. There *is* historical precedent, though, that American Indians are made invisible in popular media and portrayed by people of other races instead. If we’ve gone from using whites in redface (the famous “blue-eyed Indians” of 1950s Hollywood) to using Asians instead (“all you tan people look alike anyway”) then that’s not much of an improvement. All those people starving and in poverty on the reservations and we can’t see fit to give any of them jobs just posing for a picture? That’s ridiculous.

And by the way, Snow White is a folk story from a culture made up of white people. So’s Sleeping Beauty, so’s Cinderella. To look at this from another angle, I would not expect an African folk tale to be portrayed with white actors unless the tale were specifically about people of European extraction. So I’m not sure why it’s offensive that people expect characters from European folktales to be white, except to the extent that those are the folktales most often told to American kids of all races. The obvious solution there is expose our kids to a wider range of folk tales. I already do with mine. It all has contributed to who we are as a people today.

That said, these photos are awesome and gorgeous. Just, if we’re going to make political statements about this sort of thing, it helps when they’re grounded in reality.

  20. Do you need a model to do Ariel?! I’ve been obsessed with her since I was a little girl. I’m a natural red-head and she was the one I identified with the most. Your work is stunning.

  21. I think the pictures are beautiful (all of them). And pocohontas and Jasmin, particularly, because they are so accurate to the disney version of these stories.
That being said, I wish there was more accuracy with sleeping beauty, and especially with snow white, who , as the legend states, had “skin as white as snow” (Hence her name).

And to the people complaining about racism and idiocy….calling for accurancy isn’t racist or idiotic. If a movie was made that depicted Martin Luther King Jr, or Obama as a white man there would be a huge outcry of complaints from the public.

  22. wow! nice work! =]

where did you get the outfit for Princess Jasmine? did you make it?

  23. wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Lord! Jessica Rabbit and Pocahontas :P

  25. those boobs on jessia rabbit cannot be real.

  26. i m amaze to see …..i alway think that who is the back of them………..today i think to see barbie in real life..its gud

  27. Wow…Snow White just became my favorite.

  28. I love them all! Beautifully done! I want to be one =^_^=

  29. Wow. All I saw were women who were once little girls dreaming to be a Disney princess get that child hood dream and fun! I’m sure if it were for a promo or Hollywood, the pictures would be more accurate. It’s all in fun, let’s calm down people. Geeze.

  30. Odd that those brown-haired women are considered blonde in the US of A.

    //Finland

  31. i’ve always love disney princess. when i see their photo its cartoon but for me as in its the first time isee them in total human .
    chrissia

  32. They’re all pretty!!! My only complaint- too much makeup on Snow White :( Maybe a lip stain rather than red lipstick would have been better. Something to make it look more natural real princess than another girl just dressing up as her.

  33. Pocahontas looks a bit like Mariqueen.

  34. snow white isn’t black because in the story her skin was supposed to be white as snow it has nothing to do with racism in the media and the story has been around since like the 1700s…

  35. I love this… They all look pretty close to each princess…

  36. I find it a bit disturbing that some asian is portraying Pocahontas. I think she looks like a phillipino. Seriously, why can’t anyone use REAL Native Americans to portray Native Americans? This is disgusting.

  37. Well we can see the change by artistic work and the way of presentation

  38. jessica rabbit is not a disney princess…. besides that i enjoy this and think it is well done but i wish they were also in an environment instead of just done on a white background.

  39. The pictures are gorgeous- but I have one MAJOR complaint – and I have this complaint with Disney as well in all their recent renderings of Sleeping Beauty. Aurora’s dress in the movie is BLUE!! Not pink! It is BRIEFLY changed back and forth between pink and blue at the end of the movie, (and briefly earlier when the fairies argue over it) but for the ENTIRE second half of the movie in which she is wearing the dress it is BLUE. Do we REALLY have to insist to little girls that pink MUST be a princess color that we have to reinvent the dress she is wearing in the movie?

  40. While I agree with Ian’s sentiments, Snow White is specifically having ‘skin as white as milk, hair dark as night and lips red as blood. ‘ Whicis WHY they called her ‘Snow White. Kudos to Dana for some perspective. For another take on Snow’s description, see Tanith Lee’s ‘Red As Blood.’
As to the rest, they were gorgeous and well conceived. I have issues with Disney in general, but the pictures are certainly wonderful.

  41. these are some of the best photos ever – love the way they showed the photo on the wall with the subject standing beside to photo…

  42. loving the pic of Pocahontas…she looks the same! :)

  43. how are prensesses real i thought they wearnt.

  44. @Kristi honestly I agreee with you for the most part, but I rather prefer the pink dress to be honest. Maybe the Photographer preferred the pink dress? (though I would expect Disney to show the blue dress a little more often)
@CECILY they are the disney princesses, the photographer is merely showing how they would look if they were indeed real

  45. Belle!!! Belle needs to be next and Tiana and then Merida (Brave) awesome photos love it

  46. Beautiful photos and all of the models have incredible likeness to the Disney princesses. I was offended by someone’s comment that “some Asian” was posing as Pocahontas. Everyone getting up in arms about different races portraying these characters needs to chill out. She looks EXACTLY like Pocahontas, that’s why. Jeez. Also, to the person ranting about giving jobs to impoverished Native Americans… if you’re so worried about it, then why don’t you find them a job instead of complaining about their situation on a completely irrelevant forum.

  47. Here we go again people making the whole race thing an issue yet again, ever think that might be the reason racism is still alive today cause people are constantly bringing it up making an issue where there doesnt need to be one!!

The pictures are amazing and very well done I would love to be Pocahontas or Ariel but I cant can I because im white and not half fish…….is that the point your trying to make??!!!

    Loving your work!!!

  48. I know someone who looks EXACTLY like Esmaralda … who is also a model… just sayin
