3D Paintings on Panes of Glass

Using multiple layers of clear glass, Canada based David Spriggs and Chinese born Xia Xiaowan, transform flat artwork into 3D sculptures. Viewers are treated to different shifting perspectives of the works based on where they stand in the art space. Spriggs work revolves around powerful explosive imagery, often resembling storms, cosmic blasts or firework like explosions. Xiawan’s “spatial paintings,” which often feature distorted figures, are drawn individually using colored pencil on tinted glass. Only when these pieces are combined on their floor racks do the images create the whole hologram like effect.

  1. Beautiful artwork… couldn’t this same technique be used for creating the next series of computer monitors so we could design true holographic displays? Wonder if anyone is working on this…

  2. This is innovative and truly amazing, I live in Philadelphia, and would like to know if this artwork and designer visits the U.S.
    Thank you!

  3. beautiful work of art. must be really difficult to do one of these.

  4. hey!what’s this all confuzzlement about?frightening creatures and their rubbish and shocking depiction!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!what prompted u to cling to such fathead step to showcase this all?

  5. the order of toppings is all wrong. should be tortilla, then:
    1. rice or beans
    2. same as above
    3. meat (lots please)
    4. salsa
    5. guac
    6. sour cream
    7. cheese
    8. lettuce

  6. Images 2, 4, 7, and 8 (all the cosmic pieces)are by artist David Spriggs. http://www.davidspriggs.com/

  7. Impressive hologram effect.

  8. Not to be crude, but is the 5th one a 3D painting of a guy sticking his head up his own ass? Or someone else’s even?

  9. This is a new and very unique form of art to me. It’s a bit creepy, but still surreal.

  10. was i the only one that saw a dude pulling his head out of a vagina

  11. Very interesting these paintings in 3D. Here you can also see 3D Paintings on the ground:

  12. I just recently saw the dandelion one in person! It was on display at a giant city-wide festival called ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, MI. Wow! It placed in the top ten.

  13. I WANT TO MAKE ONE 0F THESE IN PLASTIC! I’m in art college now, I’m totally going to present this to my art professor and see what we an come up with.

  14. Well done. It’s truly interesting. Keep it up.

  15. These are incredible – wish I could see them for real. Such a simple idea but they look perfectly executed. Great photographs of the artworks too!

  16. I have seen this before in SecondLife. Perhaps the creator is the same.

  17. Some of these works are of David Spriggs. You can see the exact images on his website: http://www.davidspriggs.com/

As kat points out, David Spriggs’ Vision won 5th place in ArtPrize.

Author should change the article to reflect this update.

  18. interesting artwork, but if it was more cheerful, more optimistic would have enjoyed more … what could have inspired the artist to create it?

  19. “Beautiful artwork… couldn’t this same technique be used for creating the next series of computer monitors so we could design true holographic displays? Wonder if anyone is working on this…”

This has been done with layered LCD screens. A company was showing this technology at Siggraph in Los Angeles, about five years ago. They were showing the original Quake video game on it, and unlike current 3D technology, this one let you look around corners by moving your head. I haven’t seen it since.

  20. I want to throw up now.

  21. amazing art! lol

  22. thanks for making my day

  23. Nice Idea…. Poorly Executed don’t get me wrong i’d love to have the 14x18ft. galaxy piece in my living room but i don’t live in a ware house!? It’s beautiful but way too impractical for the average joe. No offense but step your game up….this would have been all the rage in the 80′s or 90′s but Samsung has flexible screens that are as thin as paper… In contrast this is just disappointing, but only because i want it. o and the art is kinda creepy…

  24. oh mi god!!!!!!!! how does he do that?!?!

  25. I don’t know about everyone else, but I thought the last of the Xia Xiaowan paintings looked like things from Dante’s Inferno. I just read the book and they reminded me of some scenes from it.

  26. interesting art….i think the one that several people have commented on is #5 and to me it appears that this person is birthing him or herself? it’s a bit disturbing but not as bad as the one where he is eating himself or the limb of another person? Kind of makes you wonder about this artists frame of mind.. hmmm….

  27. As an artie myself I always admire the effort of any artist in producing his vision. The bigger the item the more difficult it is to retain perspective.

  28. awesome!!! and so interesting!!!

  29. It reminds me of the very old photographic technique of PhotoStereoSynthesis – something I investigated in my own work a few years ago:

    http://www.shardcore.org/shardpress/index.php/category/photostereosynthesis/

  30. woooooooooooooooooooooow. its wonderfullllllllll

    how he can do it.
    really these are unimagenable……..!

  31. cool!!

  32. Wow, that is a amazing effect! Great. 3D painting!

  33. yea..that 5th one is just weird..

  34. Hahahahaha! All you people freaked out by art…that’s what it is, art. Someone giving birth to himself or climbing back into his mother…mmm only a real artist can come up with weird things like that! Love this…Most Certainly NOT for the average Joe. This must be kept in a museum where everyone can go see it.

  35. The idea isn’t new though. Codeak, a graffiti writer who was born in Hong Kong and now lives in Germany has done this in 2001 at the Urban Discipline exhibition

  36. To be honest I was expecting a more profound 3d effect – cool work, don’t get me wrong.

  37. For the comment about someone doing this earlier, I know Spriggs was doing this before that.

  38. geez im sick of your “this isn’t new” crap. just ENJOY!!

  39. Stumbled

  40. i like this..its so amezing work…

  41. Wow this is amazing, stumbled upon this and really glad I did!

  42. Unbelievable, there is no limit to what people can do. Wish I could see the real thing and not just photos.

  43. How long does it take to complete one of those? Amazing.

  44. I like it.
    Flat artwork into 3D sculptures.
Use it as a different perspective on what I’ve seen.
And I have to take time to learn it and understand art.

  45. Things like this that make me sad the world is ending tommorrow…lol

  46. This are very well done. The craftsmanship is wonderful. Seeing these on the computer screen doesn’t do these works justice. Hope to see works like these in a gallery someday.

  47. that is amazing work.
Not only the subject matter but the technique is spot on.
    Keep up the good work
